7100s do need pairs, because they have a 64 bit memory bus. My IBM POWERstation 7011 230 is like that for the same reason.

madmann: the 650 uses 72pin simms which are 32bit. so you can put in single simms.
tech is right about the x100 powermacs. tehy use a 64bit memory bus.
