I've used Linux casually for the last several years and I'm comfortable with that, and if it comes to it, I may put NetBSD on here. My thoughts though, are that if I'm going to run a non Apple OS, I might as well use x86 hardware and find a different purpose for this. My original intention was to find the most recent version of OS X that I could get to run stably on here, then turn every service and feature off that I could and compile Apache from scratch and go to there. The website I had in mind is going to be ridiculously simple and will be mostly a portal for my fiance's direct sales store and other social media links. The store would not be run by me or on anything I was responsible for so no worries there. This will mostly be a feed for sale updates and new products with an easy to remember domain name. I can do without php and may stick with html/css stuff. I am overall torn on the direction I want to take because I love this old hardware but I need things to be functional. Mix that with my desire to run an Apple OS on it and as you guys with your more applicable knowledge and experience may mean I cannot do what I am wanting to with this machine. We shall see though.
Posted by: IPalindromeI on 2015-02-05 07:04:47 Unless you're a Unix wizard like John, who doesn't mind this, you'll need to basically recompile everything facing the public, and at that point, why not just run a regular Unix? The benefits of OS X for "simplicity" are lost then. (OS X isn't really that good at being a server anyways.) I suggest going regular x86 and using your G3 for ASIP for some classic Mac OS workgroup fun.
