What I don't understand is how he could trust someone he never met over a long distance and then advance them money without knowing who they really are or getting them to sign a contract.

An old friend of mine once said, "I like apple pie. I derive no joy, however, from watching someone else eat it." I like it. That seems to agree with everyone in this case.
The lesson then is, don't let someone else program a game you won't play. Hmmm.
