Very nice. Those are much better constructed than the original black ones. The button is quite horrible on the older one.

My friend made me a killer deal and I picked up an 840av today.



Also snagged a 7500 for parts and one of those funky, round external microphones.

Hey sorry if you've answered this but I'm just wondering; do you tend to keep most of the stuff you acquire in working order, or shelve it for long term storage and display, or some third option I'm too drunk to currently identify?

I guess my point is that I've noticed you have a wonderful collection. I'm wondering what a day in the life of someone who is actively acquiring and storing all this cool stuff.

Unless its a lost cause or bought for parts, I'll restore to original configuration and running condition. Capacitors, Retrobrite and other repairs get made. Because of the amount of machines there are, I have to keep most of in my storage room at work (we have several unused rooms and I staked a claim to one). It keeps the where the temperature is controlled and out of sun or fluorescent light. I have maybe ten or so out and about at the office. Once I feel it's finished, I'll snap some shots and put it in the gallery at applefool.com

I used to love the way Dana would restore pics of her old Macs to a glory they'd never had in real life with Photoshop, but I really love the approach you've taken of restoring, photographing and then storing the real deal.

Question is: how much of Applefool.com is "really" real and how much of it is Memorexed? 😀

I wasn't doubting their existence or the quality of your restorations. I just wondered how much time you spend tweaking you photographic documentation in Photoshop. Everything looks so beautiful, it reminds me of the maniac's images.

Thanks for the invite, doing an RV circle of the Pacific North-West is #1 on my wish list, #2 is the North-West. I've done two in the South-West one above and one below the GC. Renting a camper at the end of a plane ride is the ONLY way to see this wonderful country, especially with a pregnant wife . . .

. . . private bathrooms on wheels are priceless. 😱)

p.s. hopefully I won't be doing that again in this lifetime. :O

The only things I "fix" in the photos are lint on the felt. I'm not a photographer by any means, which probably shows.

The finished machines are all pretty clean. They all get completely torn down. The plastics go through the dishwasher (quick cycle, no soap, no heated drying). The internals are all thoroughly dusted and swabbed. Many get the retrobrite treatment which leaves them not only de-yellowed but also cleaner than any other bath I could give them.

The first university surplus sale of 2013 did not disappoint today (which was a surprise):



Yep, That's a $12 price sticker on there. The hard drive was removed but it does have two Apple video cards, a network card and 20MB RAM (eight SIMMs). It needs a good retrobriting and has been branded by University of Wisconsin but it's my first IIfx and I'm stoked.

Seems to have some odd power issue, though. It will turn on cold for a couple of times but then refuse to power up. I replaced all of the logic board caps and it's still the same. Time to start sleuthing.

Sounds to me more like one of the batteries.

They tested at 3.6v and 3.5v. I even tried a different pair.

I went back over all of the solder points again but didn't have time to test before leaving work so I'll see what happens tomorrow.

The IIfx has two of the common 47uf aluminum cans and the rest are axials.

I could probably make up a legend for the 840av. I have one for the Duo 280 and the PowerBook 190cs ready to go.
