| Casemod: PPC 8500 |
Posted by: Bolle on 2007-05-02 11:39:08 heyho!
some of you may know the pics already from IRC.
It once was an old dirty and extremely dusty powermac 8500.
now it´s shiny again.
specs:
PM7600 TNT Motherboard (original NITRO board died due to overclocking)
XLR8 MACH Carrier ZIF G3 @ 321,6MHz
System Bus @ 53,6MHz
Mac Picasso 860 graphics with 3D overdrive
200MB RAM
2G+4G HD
Apple CD 600
OS 9.2.2 and OS 7.6.1
Custom painted case with window. <-some nice LEDs make it shine in the dark. 😎
pics: (notice that some pics still show the old motherboard build in)

Posted by: The Macster on 2007-05-02 11:49:09 Wow, that's amazing!! How did you manage to make the hole in the side? - it looks to be a perfectly shaped Apple logo
Looks awesome! one of the few windows mods i like. When I first saw that I thought it was going to be one of those things where someone's put a PC inside a Mac case! 😛

Posted by: Bolle on 2007-05-02 11:54:11 A friend of mine is a super-hero 😉 when it comes to dremeling holes into things. I asked him if he can do the apple logo and he said yes... I took about 2 hours to get it perfect.

Posted by: Bunsen on 2007-05-02 12:57:16 By hand ... with a dremel ??? I would have said laser cut
|
Posted by: Unknown_K on 2007-05-02 13:19:23 Looks nice, but don't you think you should have painted the rest of the case as well?
|
Posted by: Bolle on 2007-05-02 13:21:35 it´s painted white. 😛
|
Posted by: quinterro on 2007-05-02 18:48:52 Great job!
Just one problem - it's still an 8500. [😉] ]'>
They're nice machines, but putting the cover on is a pain on occasion.
|
Posted by: Unknown_K on 2007-05-02 18:55:01 Ah, you know I figured it was a little too new looking but I asumed you photoshoped the picture.
|
Posted by: Bunsen on 2007-05-02 23:34:55 I actually like that you've left the front more or less vanilla.
|
Posted by: Unknown_K on 2007-05-03 05:13:53 Did you use a vinyl paint that soaks into the plastic? Most other paints with scratch and peel off eventualy. Since the middle section is painted metal you can get away with most anything there.
|
Posted by: Bolle on 2007-05-03 05:28:20 I dunno what kind of paint it was. The man in the store said it´s ok for painting plastics.
|
Posted by: TylerEss on 2007-05-03 06:10:51 That's a great casemod and I agree: the first window mod that I actually like... but isn't the window on the wrong side of the case? Don't you want it to look in to see the PCI cards?
|
Posted by: Bolle on 2007-05-03 07:30:49 first wanted it to put on the other side but i thought when you put you put it there you only see the ugly (and a lil bit dirty) plastics inside. besides that it was easier to fit the leds on this site... I simply glued them onto the mobo. on the other side it would have been a lil bit more fiddling.
|
Posted by: TylerEss on 2007-05-05 11:19:17 oh, cool. Didn't realize that you'd only be able to see the ugly plastic.
|
Posted by: defor on 2007-05-07 20:23:28 what are all the wires coming off the mobo in the last pic/
|
Posted by: Bolle on 2007-05-07 21:13:32 they go to the leds i glued onto the mobo.
|
Posted by: alk on 2007-05-08 08:39:55 You should put a sheet of translucent white plastic behind it and some CCFL tubes at the top and bottom of the case to illuminate the Apple.
That would be pretty sweet.
Was the 6500 case mod shown on AF your inspiration for this?
Peace,
Drew
