| SCSI2SD Mount for the SE/30 |
Posted by: joethezombie on 2017-11-17 20:33:33 Some of you may remember my "Universal Mount" for the SCSI2SD. It works well for mounting the SCSI2SD v5 or v6 boards in pretty much any Mac, but I've never been happy with how it mounts in the compact Macs:

As you can see, it's upside-down, and it is hard to get to the SD card. You can mount it the other way around, but then it mounts really high above the drive cage, and the SCSI cable is oriented backwards, so you have to twist it. It also leaves a huge area of wasted space. So, with my wife out the state for a few weeks, what better way to spend the down time by improving it for my target machine, the SE/30. Or really, the 805-5050 floppy drive cage, of which it mounts on top.
Here's what it looks like:

And perched on top the floppy drive with the stock LED attached to the periscope!

Used in conjunction with a longer SCSI cable, the cable is run under the mount, and is oriented correctly to connect to the logic board without having to twist it! And it works for both v5 and v6 boards!
 
I also included mount points to orient the SCSI2SD the "normal" way, but you'll have to twist the cable when connecting to the logic board:
 
Here it is installed. There's so much room for activities!

The first version has a few problems. First, the tabs that lock into the 805-5050 are too wide, so I had to snip them to size. The whole thing is also 1/8" too long, so I'm worried if tightening the screws it might crack the rear tabs. Also, the mount points for the SCSI2SD are slightly too far foward, which blocks the power connector on the v6 board. I've made changes to the model, and when I get free time at the library again to print another one, I'll make sure everything is good, and then I'll release the design files here. Stay tuned!

Could you do a slimmed down version without the LED holder? I needed a scsi2sd mount for my 2x800k SE and this could work great! Yeah, good idea! So on the 2x800k SE, does it just use two 805-5050s stacked on top of each other, or are the cages a bit different?

The problem was, the 3D printer at the library couldn't print such a large flat surface without it becoming very wavy. That's why I ended up moving to the thicker beam layout. I do think my beam thickness could probably be reduced significantly.

With a tiny bit of jeweler's file work, a horizontal MicroSD slot aligned with the activity LED might not be noticeable.

Worst case scenario: file ALL the cooling slots to the same profile for better cooling and maybe even full SD Card stealth installation?
The crazier approach (my personal favorite [😱)] ]'> ) would be to check for available cubic to reprise the Hanging Bat HDD Hack in my IIfx. If there is clearance between the chassis floor under the FDD and top of the ROM and RAM SIMMs, under the chin cooling vents become the obvious choice for SD/MicroSD card slot positioning.
That particular chink in the bezel has always been my access slot of choice for a PowerPC/Compact/CD hack. [}🙂] ]'>

Way cool, Eagle! My first prototype looked exactly like that. Very cool! I was on a similar track as well for my 2.5" Savvio SCA HDD installation, but the thin aluminum of a piece of step-flashing (under $1 per) was my prototyping material of choice.

I'm in a different position as many of my Macs were bought "known" to be DOA or as empty hulks specifically intended for case hacks. Sometimes I've needed to buy replacements for deaders that responded well (if undesirably) to poking and prodding done out of curiosity. :-/

I had to take a small sabbatical to deal with some family life, but I will print out v2 at the library tomorrow and if everything works out, I'll post the design files. I made two of them, one with the periscope for single-floppy compacts, and one without for the dual-drive SEs. Of course, one could always just nip off the periscope.
