| Macintosh 128 Error |
Posted by: elhafid on 2026-02-25 22:45:14 Bonjour, help erreur macintosh 128 au démarrage. Colonnes verticale fixes. Sad mac avec erreur Code Sad Mac 04DE0B. |
Posted by: Byrd on 2026-02-25 23:01:24 Hi,
No translation needed - you likely have failed 4164 RAM, more than one chip, I would recommend desoldering all, replace with DIP16 sockets and new tested 4164 chips. Having just done this, it is not a fun job at all to do, you will need time and good soldering skills to get there.

Posted by: elhafid on 2026-02-25 23:09:04 Bonjour et Merci beaucoup. Comment vérifier celles défectueuses svp ?
Ça peut pas être juste une instabilité de voltage ? Merci encore |
Posted by: Byrd on 2026-02-25 23:51:49 It points to a faulty chip in one of the banks (F9) going by the error code. You can "piggyback" a known good 4164 over the suspect faulty chip to test as troubleshooting measure. However there are likely more chips at fault or more to come very soon.
Voltage instability - unlikely
More info here on the code to decipher:

Posted by: elhafid on 2026-02-26 00:29:19 Merci encore. Comment savoir qu'elle puce suspectée svp ? |
Posted by: Byrd on 2026-02-26 00:43:38 Look at the letters and numbers silkscreened on the motherboard - and double check the Sad Mac codes. These diagnostic codes are pretty amazing really, for the time.
As mentioned, there will be more faulty chips when you replace this one, or to come. |
Posted by: bibilit on 2026-02-26 00:44:37 Hi, if you are not comfortable with a soldering iron,, you will probably not be able to do much, chips are soldered to the board and repairs are not for a beginner, you can damage the board in the process.
first digits are for the main issue, the others for location, but several are probably faulty.
in french now :
Posted by: elhafid on 2026-02-26 01:05:49 Vous aviez eu le même code erreur ? 04DE0B ? Quelles puces acheter svp ? Un lien fiable ? Installer directement ou sur tulipe ? |
Posted by: Byrd on 2026-02-26 01:19:23 No, I didn't get the same code but a similar Sad Mac code referencing the likely position of the faulty DRAM module.
I sourced good 4164 chips from here very recently:
jcm-1.com
You may need to send the board somewhere and as mentioned, recommend you replace all 16 DRAM chips at the same time, using sockets as new old stock RAM can also fail due to age and sensitivity of the components. I also purchased a 4164 DRAM tester to ensure this. |

Posted by: elhafid on 2026-02-26 08:59:58 Hi i tested voltage, the red file give about 9 -14v. Too high ?? This could be the problème ? |

|
Posted by: bibilit on 2026-02-26 11:05:38 No, the fault code is clear, memory issue.
This is a common problem on the 128/512 line.
The voltage is better tested at the rear floppy port. The red wire is neg 12 (- 12 volts) and if removed from the board, probably will no be accurate. |
Posted by: elhafid on 2026-02-27 03:14:10 Thank you again . Who could please replace them for me, paid if no too expansive... |
Posted by: elhafid on 2026-03-01 02:59:54 Is it better to use tulip dip socket please ? |
Posted by: elhafid on 2026-03-01 03:18:31 Please, where can i buy compatible chips for macintosh 128 and sockets. I need 20 units for each . Thank you. |
Posted by: Byrd on 2026-03-01 03:20:51 I recently used dual-wipe, “tulip” sockets are higher quality but the new RAM be a difficult fit don’t use.
You are looking for 16-pin DIP sockets x 16, and 4164 compatible DRAM x 16 below 150ns. |
Posted by: elhafid on 2026-03-01 03:26:09 Thank you |

Dram 4164 16ko x 16 to maintain 128 ko ? |
