Posted by: SophieRose on 2023-12-08 03:23:07 Thanks @joshc ๐ a great addition to my lil Mac clan.

Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-12-08 03:30:55 Nice! Welcome to the SE club! |
Posted by: Phipli on 2023-12-08 04:36:04 My first Mac of my very own was my SE ๐ I used to do my homework on it and "print" it using a HP pen plotter.
They're nice machines. Happily run 7.0.1 or 7.1, but idea is dual booting, 6.0.7 or 6.0.8 for every day use, 7.* when needed for compatibility.
Do you have 4MB in it? |
Posted by: zefrenchtoon on 2023-12-08 05:00:33 Any expansion card in it ? ๐ |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-08 05:49:44 Oh, how great!! I know youโve been waiting quite some time for it! |

Thanks @joshc ๐ a great addition to my lil Mac clan.
View attachment 66401 Shock! I think we'd all assumed you had several ;-) ! Looks very clean and bright! Also, nice keyboard - I have an Apple Keyboard II for my Performa 400 (though the <| power key certainly doesn't turn it on). Thanks to @croissantking, I have a replacement flyback for my SE; so there might be another SE to join the ranks in early 2024!
This also begs the question: what OS are you running on it & what applications would you install? (obviously ones that need <=3MB). |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2023-12-08 08:01:54 @Phipli You had a pen plotter as a kid?! Man, I would've given anything for one of those. ๐ |

@Phipli You had a pen plotter as a kid?! Man, I would've given anything for one of those. ๐ Yeah, a HP 7475A ๐
It had manual controls so I could use it as an etch-a-sketch. But mostly with MacDraw and ClarisCAD.
We have a boxed copy of the driver MacPlot by Microspot somewhere. Really cool interface if you haven't used it. It is like the Finder and you drag pens into the carousel instead of files and folders. |
Posted by: VMSZealot on 2023-12-08 08:30:44 Yeah, I love my SE. I don't bother with System 7 on it (although I remember my dad giving me a shrink-wrapped System 7 box on the day it was released, and the sinking feeling of oh balls - now I need to get a memory upgrade! Then there was the trepidation of dismantling it for the first (of now countless) times, and the fear of breaking something. The point of no return snipping of the resistorโฆ Andโฆ Andโฆ). Back in the day, System 7 was pretty good on it - but now I have more suited machines for System 7.
So my SE has System 6 on it, and gets used for Arkanoid, Pinball Construction Set, Starglider, the Magnetic Scrolls adventures, and other software that gets sniffy about running on newer machines. |

I have a floppy disk for MacPlot, but not the box. ๐ Mine is version 4.2 "Standard." What version do you have?
I also (relatively recently) briefly had an HP 7475A. I modified it to use regular height pens. I then made my own 3D printer adapter for Sharpie pens. It worked surprisingly well. |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2023-12-08 09:29:16 Oops, didn't mean to hijack the thread. Sorry, I'll stop. |
Posted by: SophieRose on 2023-12-08 11:57:23 Stuck 6.08 on an mo for now.. loving it. Yeah it has 4mb.

Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-08 11:59:55 6.0.8 is best. No need for 7, especially if you have the IIfx. |
Posted by: joshc on 2023-12-08 12:49:45 Glad youโre happy with it. ๐ |
Posted by: cheesestraws on 2023-12-08 12:55:48 Nice! Yeah, 6 is best for those machines. |
Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-12-08 14:04:22 Is this the first Compact you've owned? |
Posted by: SophieRose on 2023-12-08 14:26:33
Is this the first Compact you've owned? I had an se back in the late 90s with a 20 inch ecl monitor attached via a card. Was a huge setup. It feels so good doodling on the little screen๐๐จ๐๏ธ |

It feels so good doodling on the little screen๐๐จ๐๏ธ That's a really interesting point. I usually play with Mac Plus emulators, but when I re-powered my Plus in preparation for the UK Meetup I was really struck by how cute the 9" screen is. It really is dinky, with dinky icons and graphic elements all seemingly oversized compared with the displays we're now used to. And of course it bulges out a bit which is appealing in its own way.
Good sketch BTW! |
Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-12-08 15:38:21 @Snial what do you mean "dinky"? 9" screen was a huge step up from my Smith Corona word processor ๐
|
Posted by: bigmessowires on 2023-12-08 16:21:38 I see your tiny Smith Corona display, and raise you my KIM-1 ๐

(not actually mine) |
