Mac mini in Mac SE/30 case / Screen resolution
Posted by: macsonny on 2023-08-11 23:39:43
Hi All,

I've placed a Mac mini into a Mac SE/30 case and then installed a 9.7" iPad screen with driver board to create a cool little Mac unit. I plan on running a Classic Mac emulator on this unit.

One issue I have is that the screen size is bigger than the size of the Mac SE/30 front panel. As you can see from attached photos, this means the far edges of the screen can't be seen which is not ideal. I don't want to modify the front screen panel so really want a way to shrink the output of the Mac mini on the iPad screen to be say 80% of the size of the iPad screen.

Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks

Does MacOS allow you to adjust any overscan/underscan settings?

Would this work if using a Mac Mini G4 with System 9?
That’s the project I envisioned to do soon…

For that you should probably get a 8,4” lcd that fits the case better.

do what i did. Take a broken CRT, cut off the front but keep the band and mount points and mount a 8” lcd inside. Still need to be cleaned up in the back but no gaps or anything visible from the front. And I like the fast that you have black borders like a classic Mac.

That looks very nice!

Im very happy with the result, it still has the CRT glare from the rounded screen front and feels very "right"

What did you use to cut the glass?

What did you use to cut the glass?
Angle grinder with diamond cutting disc for glass/tile. Remember to break the glass bead (with pliers) at the end of the neck to depressurize the crt. Throw a blanket over it to be safe when doing that. And use safety glasses!

Which 8" display did you use?

It’s ok but I would probably get a brighter one for the next build. Note that a 8.4” won’t fit inside the glass unless you cut the corners off. That’s why I went with an 8”

Found an app called BetterDisplay. Worked a treat!

Yeah, I found 9.7" was a little large but after modifying the under scan it now looks perfect. Very happy.

What did you do about the gaps between the bezel and screen if you didn’t keep the crt glass front?

This is the ONLY way I’d ever consider doing one of those mods.

I just left a gap between the bezel of the compact Mac and the LCD screen. Looking front on you can't see the gap anyway.

Each to their own.

For some macs there are 3D-printed bezel adapters available:

Sweet. Do they have a similar solution for the Mac SE or Mac SE/30 do you know?

Yes, there are -- at least, I think so. I did a project like this several years ago with a damaged SE/30, a Mac mini, and this LCD panel, but at this point all I can recall is that I found the file for the adapter linked from a YouTube video, and that it may not have been a proper fit, because I remember using black Sugru to fill in small gaps.

(I'd still like to get a piece of molded acrylic or the front part of a CRT for the rounded screen.)
