My IIfx progress
Posted by: SophieRose on 2023-04-15 10:11:03
I thought I'd start a thread about my IIfx as it's gonna take a while to fix with lots of photos.

Today I repaired a few vias under one of the batteries.

Awesome πŸ™‚

What's your process? I tend to visually search for damage, repair, then test for continuity... then once I've fixed everything I don't like the look of, power on and see if there is anything still not working.

Then I flail about like an octopus out of water until I happen upon a solution. Based on guesswork, intuition and brow furrowing.

It is time consuming, but it works eventually by sheer bloody-mindedness.

Not having an oscilloscope is a bit of a frustration.

Yep same process here too..visual stuff first. Then deductive reasoning.. πŸ˜ƒ what Ive got left.. if any πŸ˜‚

I'm taking my time cos it's a IIfx.

I've never even used an fx, they're quite a monster.

I need to get back to my IIx sometime, I got it running after it arrived battery bombed, but it has gained intermittent video. Once I have it stable again and put metal clip RAM sockets in it, I plan to solder in a CPU socket so I can use a socket processor accelerator.

I have a 33MHz upgrade meant for a IIvi waiting for it. That's my poor-man's fx plan. Sadly without the quirky hardware.

Thanks for sharing! The IIFX is high on my 'want' list, love to see one being patiently restored.

More progress.. fitted logic gates for the power on circuit.

@Phipli They're super fast. I think probably because of the 40 MHz bus speed. It feels faster and more responsive than my 040 accelerated IIci.

Really nice job on the repairs. Mine had a capacitor blow followed by the main 5v (or was it 12v?) trace turn bright red then curl up like one of those cheap firecrackers. Replaced all the caps and ran a nice thick bodge wire to fix the destroyed trace, and it's been functional ever since.

Edit: Speaking of capacitors, while you're at it, I'd recommend a 25v capacitor for C1. That one likes to blow and leave a little crater. I'm convinced it's under rated, and when the cap become even just barely underperforming, it'll blow.

Good tip with the caps.. was thinking of fitting 25v caps to be sure. Today I got the shielding out.. that was a job n arf 😦instasquare.photoeditor.effect.cutout_2023419152238605.png

Job n arf?
A Job and a half.

50% more job than a regular one.

Not quite as bad as a buy one job, get another free.

@LaPorta

Not sure why, but you've made me think of this :

Which is officially off topic.

Good thing I don't or it would be all solid blocks of text with no punctuation and incomplete sentences.

I apparently bail from sentences as soon as I see understanding in the other person's face.

Don't think I've seen that. Is it better than Robo Vampire?
