| My IIfx progress |
Posted by: SophieRose on 2023-04-15 10:11:03 I thought I'd start a thread about my IIfx as it's gonna take a while to fix with lots of photos.

Today I repaired a few vias under one of the batteries.

What's your process? I tend to visually search for damage, repair, then test for continuity... then once I've fixed everything I don't like the look of, power on and see if there is anything still not working.
Then I flail about like an octopus out of water until I happen upon a solution. Based on guesswork, intuition and brow furrowing.
It is time consuming, but it works eventually by sheer bloody-mindedness.
Not having an oscilloscope is a bit of a frustration. |
Posted by: SophieRose on 2023-04-15 11:45:54 Yep same process here too..visual stuff first. Then deductive reasoning.. π what Ive got left.. if any π
I'm taking my time cos it's a IIfx. |

I'm taking my time cos it's a IIfx. I've never even used an fx, they're quite a monster.
I need to get back to my IIx sometime, I got it running after it arrived battery bombed, but it has gained intermittent video. Once I have it stable again and put metal clip RAM sockets in it, I plan to solder in a CPU socket so I can use a socket processor accelerator.
I have a 33MHz upgrade meant for a IIvi waiting for it. That's my poor-man's fx plan. Sadly without the quirky hardware. |

Posted by: olePigeon on 2023-04-18 18:30:27 @Phipli They're super fast. I think probably because of the 40 MHz bus speed. It feels faster and more responsive than my 040 accelerated IIci. |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2023-04-18 18:32:54 Really nice job on the repairs. Mine had a capacitor blow followed by the main 5v (or was it 12v?) trace turn bright red then curl up like one of those cheap firecrackers. Replaced all the caps and ran a nice thick bodge wire to fix the destroyed trace, and it's been functional ever since.
Edit: Speaking of capacitors, while you're at it, I'd recommend a 25v capacitor for C1. That one likes to blow and leave a little crater. I'm convinced it's under rated, and when the cap become even just barely underperforming, it'll blow. |
Posted by: SophieRose on 2023-04-19 07:25:02 Good tip with the caps.. was thinking of fitting 25v caps to be sure. Today I got the shielding out.. that was a job n arf π¦ |
Posted by: SophieRose on 2023-04-19 08:28:12 The case gets a good clean..

Posted by: SophieRose on 2023-04-20 10:23:54 Looking more complete..

Posted by: Phipli on 2023-04-20 11:39:43
Job n arf? A Job and a half.
50% more job than a regular one.
Not quite as bad as a buy one job, get another free. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-04-20 11:42:24 Ahhh! Looked to me like a dog going βarf!β Or something, I didnβt get it! |

Not sure why, but you've made me think of this :
Which is officially off topic. |
Posted by: SophieRose on 2023-04-20 11:58:08 Yep π sorry.. sometimes I type how I speak. |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2023-04-20 11:59:00 @Phipli And your "Sure 'nuff" made me think of Sho'nuff from The Last Dragon. |

Yep π sorry.. sometimes I type how I speak. Good thing I don't or it would be all solid blocks of text with no punctuation and incomplete sentences.
I apparently bail from sentences as soon as I see understanding in the other person's face. |

@Phipli And your "Sure 'nuff" made me think of Sho'nuff from The Last Dragon. Don't think I've seen that. Is it better than Robo Vampire? |
