Posted by: chiptripper on 2022-10-11 16:44:08 Hi! First: claanu = chiptripper now. (I'm working on a vintage Mac project and figured my username should match.)
I've been finding lots of stuff lately, so I'm making a thread.
Earlier this month I bought a sad, broken IIGS. It's clearly had a rough life and I paid a lot for it. Why?

Here's a hint:

Posted by: chiptripper on 2022-10-11 16:52:30 Contents: -AE GS RAM -Roger Wagner -Sandwich II SCSI -IIGS Video Overlay Card -ComputerEyes (video capture card?) -ZipGS Accelerator. And the thing even boots, ROM3.

The IIGS was just a hair before my time, by the time I got interested in Apple stuff the computer labs were full of Color Classics and LCs.
So I'll probably test and fix these cards (video overlay card definitely needs a recap) and put them up for grabs. |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2022-10-14 14:05:37 I hope you pulled that PRAM battery! |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2022-10-14 19:51:20 I always associate the IIgs with the Police Quest game because my friend got a IIgs for Christmas one year, and we watched him play the game. I think I was 10 or 11 years old. Good times. 🙂 |
Posted by: chiptripper on 2022-10-21 15:24:57 Sad conquest, check out the TAM I just received. Seller did a poor job, one layer of thin bubble wrap between components, small box. All very avoidable. Computer itself is in OK shape, but it was pristine before it shipped. Bummer. |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2022-10-21 15:26:28 aww rats... that always hurts to see, especially being a TAM... |
Posted by: Durosity on 2022-10-22 06:38:44 Man that sucks. I’d be pissed. That said I just got a Q660av in the post and it was in a box.. with no bubblewrap at all. |
Posted by: tecneeq on 2022-10-22 10:11:01 Many people have no clue, it's best to give them a hint that lack of care might cost their money (if bought via Ebay).

I hope this wasn't your money! |
Posted by: jessenator on 2022-10-22 10:25:40 sadness 🙁 |

I hope this wasn't your money! Yeah I usually send a message about it when I pay.. in this case though fortunately whilst the front has been smashed the rest is fine, so I’ve swapped it with a spare one I luckily had. The machine was actually very cheap and whilst I could request a return via eBay frankly even as it arrived it’s worth more to me than a refund. |
Posted by: chiptripper on 2022-11-09 12:53:23 TAM actually came back together nicely. Took it apart and re-bonded the CD cover with acetone, and rebuilt the shattered “foot” of the Bose unit using acetone, Tamiya putty, and approximately one million shattered bits of ABS. I was terrified of disassembling thIs thing but it wasn’t as bad as I expected. Happy with the results. |
Posted by: chiptripper on 2023-03-04 13:55:22 Absolutely the cleanest battery bomb I've ever come across. This Quadra 700 will probably live again. The floppy drive took the hit though, completely nuked. |
Posted by: jessenator on 2023-03-04 15:33:19 My former 700 was a bomber as well. Yours is definitely better off 🙂 RIP fdd |
Posted by: cheesestraws on 2023-03-04 15:42:45 Oh wow, that's incredibly constrained, isn't it! |
Posted by: CC_333 on 2023-03-05 13:08:51 It looks like that drive's spindle motor took most of the damage, but hopefully the electronic board and other parts are salvageable.

Posted by: chiptripper on 2023-03-05 20:05:14 Yeah most of the drive is salvageable too, even the housing if I can work up the energy to sand and paint. Good thing too, I have three or four of these FDDs waiting on parts. |
Posted by: joshc on 2023-03-06 05:49:33 Ooh that's like the Power Mac 7100 I had where the CD drive took all the battery explosion and protected pretty much everything else. Nice. RIP to your SuperDrive though. |
Posted by: chiptripper on 2023-10-21 22:55:10 Bought a G3 desktop on a hunch and found this delight inside, OrangePC 660 with a 400 MHz AMD K6. |
