Dirty Macs - post your pics of the filthy ones

To start things off - here are a couple pics of the logic board from a PM8100/80 I acquired for parts (PSU dead). Not sure I'm going to try to resuscitate this one - eeeww!

Posted by: ScutBoy on 2022-07-14 06:31:41 I have no pictures, but the G4 iMacs seem to be very prone to being dust hogs. I could weave sweaters out of some of the dust bunnies I've pulled out of those things.

It was surprising since the guy was the original owner and the CD drive failed at some point and he had it 'professionally' removed so I can't imagine this thing was never cleaned in almost 30 years.

Nah, it was still in use when I picked it up, he had a bunch of old banking docs on it that he accessed frequently. On the way to pick it up he called me and said the deal was off and he was going to recycle the whole thing since he couldn’t get the hard drive out. I said I could do it. When I arrived he had been trying to literally pry the hard drive out out of the sled. 😆
Posted by: Byrd on 2022-07-14 18:02:00 No pics - this was years ago - but the worst/dirtiest Mac I ever encountered was a Mac Plus used by a heavy smoker. If you've ever been into a house of such a person, you'll notice the walls are orange, greasy to the touch and should this person ever move or die, the entire plasterwork of the house would need to be replaced 🤢 Anyhow, this Mac Plus had the same greasy/orange tint as the walls, and the dust inside had solidified to a thick black ooze that I simply could not remove with any amount of heat/vinegar/soap and water. The dust ooze was impregnated with moisture, and wiping it back revealed it corroded everything it was on. It was disgusting, frankly a health concern, and the Mac Plus was ... removed from the premises, sorry to say. Just remembered another one - an early Intel iMac - found on the street - looked fine externally, didn't start up. Cracked it open, wondered what all the little white pieces of sand inside were behind the LCD - pulled back some more - and was met with the biggest ant infestation I've ever seen. They came out angry, real angry - thousands of the little buggers. The "white sand" was ant larvae. I honestly had to run it outside into the street and dump it on the nature strip until the next waste collection! Funny thing was I didn't touch it for weeks after I found it, it sat in my garage awaiting attention, and I never saw one ant come out of it. Another one! I used to visit a chap that was a classic hoarder, you had to push your feet through rubbish indoors, the entire house was blacked out and had been so for decades. However - there was this Colour Classic in the corner that was utterly pristine, nil yellowing - never touched, and like any hoarder, no attempts from me to kindly take it home were successful. I drove past the person's house recently and see he has moved (actually, no, 99% certainty he died), and that Colour Classic would have made it to the bin. JB
Posted by: Jockelill on 2022-07-21 02:26:57 Got this very filthy and battery bombed 6100. The logic board is difficult to repair due to heavy trace damage and broken chips, so I might get a new one, but hey, it came with a DOS-card😄
Posted by: Juror22 on 2022-08-01 19:08:59 The rest of the IIci that this floppy drive came out of is pristine, but the dust cover, true to its nature kept in all the dust, so that none of it could escape from the confines of the floppy. Since I am retrobriting the IIci, it was a a good time to clean and re-lube the floppy, but I had no idea it was this dirty inside!
