| SE/30 works great but no sound |
Posted by: soundworks on 2022-04-20 18:20:54 I'm sure this has been covered!
Guessing it's cap goo, but curious if anyone has another solution I should investigate other than recapping. |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2022-04-20 18:34:49 If you're saying that you haven't recapped yet, then you can throw out any other possible cause until you've done so. Also worth noting the goo isn't at fault per se, the caps themselves are in the audio circuit, and if they've failed, then you'll have no sound. |
Posted by: bcschmidt on 2022-04-20 18:44:14 When I first picked up my se30 it had very faint sound, then no sound at all the same day. After recapping the board the sound came back nice and loud. It took a couple alcohol baths to get the Flux off and I didn't even use alot. My battery didn't leak, and the caps on the logic board were leaking but did no damage at all. |
Posted by: soundworks on 2022-04-20 20:29:43 Now if I can just find someone in the bay area willing to recap my se/30! |
Posted by: soundworks on 2022-04-20 20:33:15 Or maybe someone has an SE or SE/30 that I could send my mobo to for recapping? |
Posted by: Byrd on 2022-04-20 20:55:13 Does it crash when you try to play a sound? I've a SE/30, recapped, traces check out, that does this (works perfectly apart from sound) - I'm assuming one of the sound chips is bad. |
Posted by: soundworks on 2022-04-20 21:02:25 Aha - it crashes when I play one particular sound in the sound control panel! Guessing it might be a longer/larger file? Fits your experience! |
Posted by: soundworks on 2022-04-20 21:02:56 No boot chime, btw |
Posted by: BacioiuC on 2022-04-20 21:37:40 Needs recapping 100%. Source: All my SE/30's had this problem until they were recapped. |

Agree recapping is a must but can't do it myself so need assistance. |
Posted by: BacioiuC on 2022-04-21 01:25:41 One of them did crash when playing sounds, yes. The other ones I didn't test, just had them recapped. |
Posted by: Johnnya101 on 2022-04-21 02:47:35 You can try checking in with Thomas at Amiga of Rochester. I knows he's got a bit of a backlog right now, but if you don't mind waiting at least a couple weeks, I'd use him. |
Posted by: soundworks on 2022-04-24 19:04:33 @Johnnya101 Thank you so much! |
Posted by: soundworks on 2022-04-25 15:48:32 The plot thickens...
I realized that when I played the one custom sound (previous owner) from the sound control panel it wasn't actually crashing... It was just a long sound sample. I plugged in headphones and while not loud, the sound is present and clear... |
Posted by: bcschmidt on 2022-04-25 15:51:24 I could recap your board for you but I'm up in Ontario Canada |
Posted by: jajan547 on 2022-04-28 04:28:50 I could recap your board for you in the US |

Not directly related to this thread, but since I came across this post while trying to fix a sound-related crash on my SE/30, and found a solution: check the traces around C3 and C4, there are a couple that run really close to the pads, and in my case I had shorted one of them in such a way that any audio on the left channel would trigger the reset circuit! The short was completely hidden underneath the capacitor, I had to remove it to see it.
I've just finished recapping an SE/30, and have a puzzling problem: while the boot chime is loud and clear and sounds normal, playing any sound while the system is running causes it to lock up and play a 'stuttering' boot chime for a second or two, and then restart - as if somebody pushed the...

Posted by: corytryan80 on 2024-06-13 08:39:24 Quick Question for everyone who has done a recap - I’m experiencing the same issue (has gone from faint sound to no sound). Is it the logic board or the analog board that needs recapping? |
Posted by: jajan547 on 2024-06-13 08:49:06 Definitely the logic board is the main culprit, well and batteries. Analog board is straight forward though. |
Posted by: obsolete on 2024-06-13 09:07:27 I've fixed this issue by thoroughly cleaning and recapping the logic board, hopefully that's all yours needs. |
