Kermit, the super green SE/30
Posted by: elemenoh on 2021-07-31 14:59:08
I might have gone a bit far customizing Kermit. In addition to the green case from @maceffects, I made a custom all green LED clear fan, green HDD LED and today swapped in a green phosphor CRT from a IIc monitor. It's hard to capture in photos and videos, but looks a perfect shade of green in person.

Now I just need to find a green ADB keyboard. Maybe Macway made one?

This was after the HDD/Fan mod but before the screen mod.

More pics please! I'd look into an ADB to USB keyboard adapter and maybe an RGB (green) keyboard with (green) keycaps, they are around.

And a desktop pic of Kermit or name it such 😀

So beautiful!

The clear cases are awesome, but this themed approach is fantastic. Color me green with envy.

@Byrd more pics:

Oh, and I put the white phosphor CRT into the IIc monitor enclosure 🙂

I think it’ll hang in there, even though life may be a bit harder. ‘Cuz ya know… it isn’t easy, being green…

That's great fun. :-D

What a neat mod! I'm impressed about the green Apple display CRT. What a perfect idea!

Byrd's idea about using ADB to USB is an excellent one. This gives you the opportunity to use an original lime keyboard from a fruit-colored iMac. I would accept the black keys and a little white transparent plastic and prefer it over a non-Apple keyboard. I've a tangerine one and like how it displays its color accent. If I remember it correctly they aren't too difficult to open, so you may find a place for one or more green LEDs in there.

A technical question. What did you need to bring over from the Apple II display? Just the CRT? Yoke? Or was it even more complicated?
(I like the white Apple II display too, great!)

Looks awesome!

Gotta have the Oscar the Grouch "I love trash" extension too...

Just the bare CRT. The yoke is different between the two models. So I just swapped the bare CRTs and then adjusted the yoke until the picture was straight.

I confess I'm usually not a big fan of mods. It often means botching a working or fixable machine. But this is so well executed. Also, bringing components over from another Apple product line is a great idea.
Did you find any interference problems since you removed the internal shielding?

Thanks for the kind words. This was built out of trashed SE and SE/30 parts and a spare IIc monitor. I figured I can always undo the CRT mod too. BTW even the frame was a rusted one from a battery bombed SE/30. I had it acid stripped and then zinc plated. It’s very blingy compared to the original plating.

Without shielding, the screen can be slightly wavy in a noisy environment but is usually fine.

Sorry, I didn't want to denounce you of butchering a good Mac.
Again: A cute idea very well executed.

Oh I didn’t take it that way. I just know people here care about preservation so figured I’d share that nothing was harmed in the making of this project 🙂

Missed this part I think - what’s the shielding that you removed?

The bottom shield, analog insulator and the original case which itself acts as a shield IIRC.

Thanks. Hear you on the bottom shield and maybe original case .... does the analog vinyl sheet actually reduce RF or whatever? I thought it was just so you don't kill yourself touching live circuits while working on a plugged-in (even if powered-off) Mac.
Posted by: elemenoh on 2021-08-01 16:37:39
Yeah that part is not a RF shield but took it off to not block the green PCB.
Posted by: joethezombie on 2021-08-01 19:44:31
As mentioned, the original cases have a coated shield lining the inside. I've noticed I can put two of my compacts right next to each other with no interference, but if I put my transparent SE/30 (no shielded case) directly next to a regular compact, it gets a slightly wavy distortion. About 4-5" separation and it's gone.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I absolutely love Kermit. Great job!

I hope it's not too late to give congratulations, elemenoh, nicely done. Your greenest Green Jade is awe inspiring.

I have to mention, Can release this B-side in 1972, but it sounds like, say, the Circle Jerks could have released it a decade and a half later. Give it a chance.
