PB Duo 2300c and 270c Capacitor list
Posted by: Challenger 1983 on 2021-01-16 12:16:13
Hi everyone, I am going to start recapping my Duos as I finished Recapping the docks, Does anyone know which capacitors are required for the 2300c and 270c, Also is it worth recapping the displays?, I worry that the heat of a soldering iron could ruin the two near perfect duo screens I have.

Any help is much appreciated

Challenger

I’ve made this comment before, but I would be great if we get answers for this query if we could collate somewhere a Capacitor Replacement List (maybe in the Repairs Forum)?

Duo 2300 Motherboard Capacitors:
* 100 microFarad, 35 volt (4 total)
* 100 microFarad, 25 volt (1 total, one of the smaller two)
* 47 microFarad, 35 volt (1 total, the other smaller one)
^ The above three are all marked nichicon
* 33 EHA 5B7 (2 total, unsure on capacitance or voltage because not clearly marked)

Duo 280C Screen Capacitors (this thing is capacitor city):
* 10 microFarad, 16 volt (1 total)

* 22 microFarad 10 volt (2 total)

* 100 microFarad 6 volt (3 total)

* 47 microFarad 6 volt (6 total)

* 33 microFarad 10 volt (1 total)

* 47 microFarad 16 volt (1 total)

* 10 microFarad 25 volt (1 total)

* 10 microFarad 35 volt (1 total, on backlight board)

Thank you, I’ll order them right away

So I finished recapping the logic board of the 270c, the only issue I have now is those two unknown capacitors on the 2300c logic board, is there any way to figure out what they are?

I'd look them up and see. Or, wait a year or two for when I get around to my 2300 and I will test them with my cap tester which tells you teh capacitence 😛

I second the "cap list repository" idea.

I'm thinking 33 uF 25 volt based on the E in the second row of text on the capacitors. Also because there are 35 and 25 volt caps on the board.

To be totally safe you could use 35 volt capacitors (even if they're larger than original) because higher voltage rating is safe as long as the capacitance value is the same.

Will a higher voltage cap affect it at all?, if not I’ll order a set right away

No, it will not. Only if a cap is below a spec for voltage is it an issue. It will seriously diminish the life of the cap, and fail prematurely (if not right away).

My 2300c keyboard is AWOL and the screen brightness buttons aren’t working..  any ideas?  Can I send it to you for repair?

Do you have a dock?, if so try that and see if an external keyboard works, I would like to say that bad caps would cause this but you might want to dig out a multimeter and start testing the fuses on the logic board as well as other components for continuity. First step is probably to get that board recapped though

Yes, I have a dock, external keyboard works.  The Caps lock key lights up on internal though..

Did you end up getting that Ebay screen?

Posted by: LaPorta on 2021-01-27 10:48:33
No, the guy wouldn't budge on price, and someone bought it for $115 or something, which, to me, was way out of the ballpark for what it should be. I could be wrong, but I thought it was too much.

Ouch, that's a pretty steep price for just the screen.  I find the eBay pricing for Duo series to be pie in the sky high.

I think that is way way too high, however  when I have my 2300 apart again I will try and find the part number of the LCD for you, maybe other laptops used that panel?

The pricing for almost anything has become pie in the sky high!  And not just on eBay...

For example: at the local grocery store, an eight roll package of paper towels is almost $30.  In March of 2020 (just before the shutdowns hit), the same package was ~$12-$15, depending on if there was a sale.  Insane!! [V]

Hey Challenger, did you go with the 33 uF 25 volt or 35 volt capacitor? I'm about to recap my original Duo 2300 (an upgraded 230).

Thanks!

I’ve got reference on my site: https://macdat.net/cap_reference/apple/powerbook/duo2300.html
The 33uf cap has pretty much been confirmed to be a 25v cap. Using a 35 volt cap won’t harm anything though.
