| Macintosh Plus...should I buy? |
Posted by: Guybrush3pwood on 2016-03-17 16:07:53 Comes with Monitor - Monitor Tray - Keyboard and Mouse. Seller is asking $50. What do you think? Should I go for it?
Oh, and he says it worked the last time he plugged it in, but doesn't have a power cord for it anymore. That certainly throws up red flags. Don't these use standard power cords?

Posted by: TheWhiteFalcon on 2016-03-17 16:28:55 Correct, usual three prong.
|
Posted by: tanaquil on 2016-03-17 16:59:51 I would totally buy a Plus for $50 if the shipping weren't too high. The power plug is standard, but if he doesn't have a lot of other macs around, maybe it makes sense that he wouldn't have a compatible cord?
... What is a Monitor Tray?

Posted by: Guybrush3pwood on 2016-03-17 20:14:02 Buyer sent photo of screen booting up. Just shows a disc. These models require a boot disk to be inserted to startup correctly, right?

Posted by: Elfen on 2016-03-17 20:27:34 Mac Plus has no Internal Hard Drive, but you can connect it to an external HD. You can also boot from the floppy drive but the Mac plus disk drives are 800K only. It can boot from System 3.2 to System 7.5
It looks good for $50. If it were near me, I'd pick it up. The keyboard and mouse is worth that much!

Posted by: Juror22 on 2016-03-17 21:48:31 Sounds/looks like a decent machine for the price - I got one free (it had cracked plastic, but the internals were nice) and one for $20 (I think?) with the box, but no mouse and keyboard. I like them - they aren't as quirky as a 512/128, or as valued, so you get the original Mac experience without a lot of the issues that can eat away at the fun.

Posted by: Paralel on 2016-03-17 22:34:51 Just make sure its a ROM Rev. 3 model. otherwise you can get weird SCSI issues.
|
Posted by: CC_333 on 2016-03-17 23:10:54 ROM Rev. 3 Pluses are usually Platinum, correct?

Posted by: Paralel on 2016-03-17 23:28:34 Yep, they only come in platinum.

Posted by: Bunsen on 2016-03-17 23:29:55 That photo is way too dark to tell but .... is that an external monitor? Cause between that and the wording
Comes with Monitor - Monitor Tray If that's a Plus with an internal upgrade for a second monitor, with the (usually specific and non-standard) matching monitor, booting, for $50 ...

|
Posted by: Bunsen on 2016-03-17 23:33:45 Even so, $50 for a Plus that boots to a system disk prompt is totally fair these days. Especially with a mouse & keyboard. Heck I'd call it a bit of a bargain even.
|
Posted by: Paralel on 2016-03-17 23:48:21 I still feel lucky to have won my Plus in the "Plus a Week" contest we had here on 68k.
|
Posted by: Guybrush3pwood on 2016-03-18 12:20:12 Snagged it. Needs some retrobright, but that's no problem. Other than that it seems to work fine. Making a boot disk now to find out for sure.

Took the cover off, this fell out. Anyone know what it is or where it goes?

|
Posted by: olePigeon on 2016-03-18 17:24:53 It goes towards the back of the case on the left side just below the fan grill. I have no idea what it's for, but it goes there.
|
Posted by: Guybrush3pwood on 2016-03-18 19:43:58 Looks like we have a problem. Any disk I put in, it spits it right back out with an X on the floppy icon. Anyone see that before?
|
Posted by: Macdrone on 2016-03-18 20:46:24 needs to be 800 k and have a system folder on it.
|
Posted by: mactjaap on 2016-03-19 01:19:34 Yes. Be sure it is a bootable disk.
If that doesn't work you have to clean and lubricate the disk drive.

I have no idea what it's for
Its to ground the RF paint on the case to the main analog ground. When the back is put on, that piece bits the analog board.
