3D Printed SE/30 ROM Clips
Posted by: PotatoFi on 2020-06-29 01:07:28
I wasn't a big fan of the "rubber band" or "paperclip" brace solutions for the Mac ROM-inator II, so I decided to make some 3D printed clips for it. They press down over the top of the ROM-inator II and ROM SIMM slot, firmly bracing the ROM in an upright position. They use a simple friction fit.

There are two ways you can get it:

1. Head over to Prusa Printers and get the STL, 3MF, or GCODE and print it for yourself! Enjoy!

2. Send me a DM, and I'll send you a set for $3 plus shipping. Not really interested in making money on this, but I guess this could help me fund a couple of SCSI2SD's, eventually.

Note: My ROM SIMM is 100 percent plastic. If yours has metal clips, it probably is a different design that won't work. I don't know if there are different designs out there or not, so considering sending me a photo before "ordering" or whatever we want to call this.

Nice work on those!

Nice work. Now do one for the RAM slots that’ll cover the entire length 😉

Ooh, yes! DM'd – I have broken clips, and I'm not hopeful that using rubber bands are going to work in the long run.

Yeah, I've considered this! I do have some RAM slot clips as well. I'll post them soon (another thread).

Acknowledged! I'll get a set shipped out for you shortly.

I've decided to start offering these on Etsy. You can find them here:

Currently, they are only for the Mac ROM-inator II in the white, all-plastic SIMM slot. If there is demand for the black SIMM slot with metal clips, or for versions that work with the stock ROM, let me know and I can make them.

Quick update! I spoke with Steve at Big Mess O' Wires and sent him some clips - it turns out that there are at least two variants of white, all-plastic SIMM slots.

Type B.jpg

Type C.jpg

So now, I have "Type A" and "Type B" clips available. I also made them both compatible with stock SE/30 ROM SIMMs, so you can use this with a stock ROM if you've broken a clip on your ROM SIMM slot.

Type A

Type B

Which brings me to Type C (all-black with metal clips). Does that SIMM slot ever fail? Does anyone have issues with the BMOW ROM in that type of slot? If so, I can design a clip.

I'll do some testing with these (Type B I can test here, but Type A will need to be sent off to friends to test), and once that's done, I'll post everything to both Prusa Printers for download, and Etsy for purchase. 🙂

The Type C slot must be exceedingly rare, as I don't think I've ever seen an unmodified SE/30 LB with such a slot installed (granted, my experience is limited to maybe a dozen or two examples, but it seems like if it is a thing that exists, the odds should be such that even with such a limited number, I should've seen at least one board with a Type C slot).

This, of course, doesn't mean they don't exist!

I do have a battery-bombed SE/30 board here with slot Type C on it (see the Type C photo above). It was gifted to me by someone here at 68kmla for parts. But yeah, I don't know if it's common at all (sounds like it isn't), or if the BMOW ROM fails in it. I do have a basic design done for Type C but it doesn't quite fit yet. Needs a bit of tweaking.

I have a type C motherboard with a Rom-inator II and I’ve had no issue.

Nice work! Mine are white with metal clips. I’ve never had any issues fortunately.

@PotatoFi Any chance of making a few more of the clips? I purchased a set from you a few months ago and I see that your Etsy page is taking a break. I don't have a 3D printer and I just need a couple of clips for my MacIIx (2) that have broken plastic clips on my ROM holder.
Any help or guidance on who could print would be appreciated.

I can make a bunch, shipping from Germany would be 11€. Send me a PM if @PotatoFi doesn't have any for you.

Hello, can you print up one Type A and one Type B and put your store back on?
