I think the eMate is one the most unique devices ever made by Apple. No trackpad, have to use the touch screen, runs Newton OS, and the screen folds flat. Also, it has a tri-pod mount on the bottom. Its a very odd device.

The first thing to look for is whether it has upgraded memory -- are there two cards or only one under the battery cover? One of the ram expansion cards is probably worth $50-75, so take a peek.
Then you'll need a power supply, which it is wise to get right as the machine is easily fried. The manual will be useful to read, too, as the OS is very distinctive, and Raskinesque in its task-orientation.
There is not much on 68kmla on the Newton that is terribly worth pursuing, truth be told, though I and a few others make an effort. The best fodder is on the wider web, which you'll find easily enough. As a starting place, however, unna.org is the best place to go for software (not all of which you can use without unobtanium registration codes, by the way, but some of it you can); you'll find that the eMate manual is there, too, along with an image of the CD that came with the machine, etc. etc.
It is possible to network the thing to an OSX box, but as we generally have no shortage of old machines, I recommend the original Newton Connection Utilities when the time comes, along with Word 6 or later, or ClarisWorks, for uploading NewtonWorks documents (you'll be surprised how well even sketches are preserved), and Claris Organizer 2 for the Calendar, Names, etc. It all works seamlessly.

Make SURE the screen hinges on the eMate are okay :O
If they feel stiff (and even if they don't) there is a good chance that opening and closing the screen can result in a loud crack sound, followed by one of the hinge springs puncturing the screen ribbon cable.
This happened to me as well.

Ther is no ram upgrade as I looked there when looking for a battery. I have to find a power supply and battery I guess and ill go from there. The hinges hold when placed but they move smooth as silk. It has its stylus but looks like the end is snapped off. It looks really neat so I will look for parts and give it a go. Does it need the extra ram just for more programs and such?

There better than on any laptop I have. I read that the screens and back lights have issues . The guy who gave it to me said they were in good shape. Now just need power and away I go.

The eMate I bought and it had a power supply from Radio Shack. One of those where you can pick the voltage and tip. Works great for it!

I know the voltage and amperage from the bottom of the emate but cant find if the center is positive or negative.

I found one that fits, 7.5 volts at 1 amp. I dont have a battery and it wont turn on so I may be doing something wrong I guess or it just looks so nice but its got issues.

Newtons commonly need a soft reset when all power has been withdrawn and they have been left for a while. A soft reset works without wiping anything, whereas a hard reset - which you don't want at this stage - is intended to return to factory defaults, so is useful if the soft reset fails, or if the machine is full of stuff you don't want, or whatever.
Touch the tiny recessed button on the bottom with a pen/ paperclip briefly and see if it boots. It takes a few secs to begin.

previous owner emailed me and said it worked without, so its either my power supply or the unit. Guess ill go to radio shack and see if i can get a new universal. mine is years old, reads proper voltage but not sure on the amperage so.....

Jup it should work. Plugged mine in without the battery and it showed a green light instantly, then it should turn orange and you should hear the eMate 'bong'.
Really hope you get it working!
