BlueCI
Posted by: olePigeon on 2012-12-28 22:23:20
I was recapping and cleaning a IIci for sale, when I stumbled upon a bag of blue LEDs that I had bought years and years ago. So I went ahead and swapped out the green LED for a blue one. 😎

(Tape residue removal and Retr0Brite this weekend.)

I would suggest putting the green one back before selling it! (But, yeah, it's cool and removable 😉 .)

If I had the cash I'd buy it. : D

ci's are not expensive, 25 to 35 will get you one on the bay.

To me the Blue LED reminds me of the beginning of the (LED) revolution. It's quite refreshing to see.

i want to convert mine to high intensity red led's my cracked case IIci is going to get some fun !

olePigeon always comes up with the best ideas! 🙂

I really like that LC I Mod you did, Floppy+optical drive+Hard drive = freakin' cool!

that IIci stripe is also cool!

25 to 35... As in $25? Not like, $250? I have $25... >w>

Anyone here feel like driving to Rockmart? 😛

Maybe add a LCD , make it look like he's talking to you?

🙂

then it will seem more like it's alive. ha.

Edit, changed picture per OOM's suggestion.

Why does that mean it's got to go in its side? Can't it still stand the right way up (with the LCD rotated-of course!)? Also, what's the read fireball for?

It's a computer from a movie, (that acts like it's alive) - this computer killed a bunch of people, by the way. So Dave is shutting him, er, I mean the hal9000 computer down.

The song in the end is kinda sad.

It would be very interesting to see a HAL-eye on the front of a IIci or Q700, maybe have the strobing controlled by hard disk activity or audio output. Somewhere I remember seeing/having an old screensaver that replicated the control panels from the movie under OS 8, but I could be wrong. 😉

That blue LED is amazingly tacky.

CelGen: I don't care much for bright blue LEDs, either. It seems to me to have been something of a fad during the last 12 years or so.

Idea: Maybe make it white, like modern Macs? It would be a little easier on the eyes.

Case in point: I have some Macally External HD enclosures, and the bright blue power indicator makes an excellent nightlight! I could almost read by it if I wanted!!

Enough ranting now.

I'll see about getting a white LED.

What would be cool would be a RGB LED, and some software to control the colors (maybe connect it via an open ADB port?) 🙂

Posted by: uniserver on 2012-12-29 22:57:24
yeah, have it play/display a loop of all the colors in the apple logo 🙂

HAL went crazy because he was lied to. OOM - pick up a copy of this. Required reading. There will be a test on this at a later date.

Sorry, that's not what I meant by standing it the right way up. It should go flat like a normal II-currently it's still on its side, just the other side!

The IIci (and IIcx) case has points to mount the rubber feet for a horizontal or vertical configuration. Apple made promotional materials showing both orientations. Both ways are "correct".

A white LED would be actually really cool. If you can get milticolor LED's that include white, have white for power and green or red for the HDD activity light.
