I gotta stop trolling ePay at lunch time

Picked this up and have no idea if it works but it looks pristine.   http://www.ebay.com/itm/331507561382 We'll see in a week or two.

Nice!

I hope you bought it because of the dimension board in it... 😉 I would have bought it but didn't see the BIN. I would love to max my Cube out with 2-3 dimension boards.

Posted by: snuci on 2015-03-17 17:02:28
Yes, definitely was because of the Dimension board but the condition was what caught my eye.  My other N1000 Cube needs a paint job but that's on the To Do list.

FYI, the auction didn't start with a BIN. I just asked if they would consider one and what they wanted and they gladly set it up.

I haven't kept up with what Cubes are worth but I have been looking for a Dimension board.  If I'm extra lucky, it will be a Turbo but I'm with a non-turbo.  I don't think you can tell turbos from non-turbos from looking at the outside.

do you have to pay an extra 60 + 98 to have it imported?

Posted by: snuci on 2015-03-17 17:03:58
Yes, I'm used to it.  It's highway robbery but it's still worth it.

yeah , well at least for this find 🙂

Wow, that's a good find! Dimensions are getting tough to find.

I'm glad I grew out of those eBay days a long time ago…yeah, I was the guy who ran into the school computer lab during band practice back in 2003 to make a last minute bid on a Mac SE 🙂

Wow Scott, that sounds very familliar. Got a ThinkPad 720 same year in almost the same predicament. (In the library typing our book reports).

Nice find! It's specimens like that one that remind me just how beautifully designed the Next cubes were. Would be interested to hear updates after you receive it.

I will absolutely let you guys know what's inside and if it works.

I tried to edit my top post but couldn't so here are a couple of key pics from the auction noted above (in case it disappears in time):

Here's the NeXT Cube Model N1000A

Here's the NeXT Dimension board peaking through (it wasn't mentioned in the auction)

If you have any issues, come over to the nextcomputers.org forums. Do you have a soundbox and accessories yet? You'll need a non-adb version for this cube. (ADB is possible in the extremely unlikely case it's a turbo). Also if it doesn't have a power supply with revision 983 you need the megapixel display to power it. There are workarounds to this using a load on the -12V supply. You'll find ADB soundboxes are much easier (and cheaper!) to get a hold of. I have instructions for how to modify one to work with non-ADB available here:

Thanks archer174.

I currently have a NeXT Cube with mono screen and non-ADB sound box and peripherals plus a NeXTStation Mono slab, a NeXTStation Turbo Color with non-working color monitor and adb sound box and accessories.  I think I'm covered but thanks for the post.  I am sure it won't be perfect so I'll head over to nextcomputer.org if I run into trouble.  I've been on that board for a bit too.  I participated a little in fixing the MO drives but I recapped mine and nothing 🙁

Those MO drives took 10 years off my life I'm sure. Probably -the- most stubborn devices I've ever worked with. I just finished working on 15 of them with only 7 working at the end.

@archer174 After spending the better part of the weekend scouring the NeXT forum, I didn't realize you were 'barcher174' over there.  It's amazing what a 'b' will do 🙂  You've been doing some fantastic work over there (ADB/non-ADB sound box for one).  I do have an ADB soundbox in pieces that I can experiment with.  I'd love to hook it into a monitor but that will be a project for a later time.

I must say, in general, I am always amazed at communities like these including 68kmla working at not only restoring but innovating old, obsolete hardware.

As for the NeXT Dimension Cube,  I expect it today or tomorrow hopefully.   It's coming from an e-cycler so I am also expecting the hard drive to be missing but hopefully they left me the cables. I can't wait.

@archer174  Are you sure I need an ADB soundbox for a Turbo Cube?  Power button worked but no keyboard/ mouse.

Posted by: snuci on 2015-03-23 15:29:18
Okay, maybe I can look on eBay once in a while at lunch 🙂

Here's a post of my new NeXT Dimension Turbo Cube.  http://vintagecomputer.ca/next-dimension-cube-turbo/

@archer174, turns out it is non-adb.  I hooked up my mono MegaPixel monitor to the Turbo motherboard along with the color VGA monitor to the Dimension board and the mouse/keyboard moved.  If I can figure out how to log in, I'd be all set.

This is a true conquest now.

You sir, just won the lottery. We currently estimate around 300 of those machines ever making it out of the factory. Excellent score!
