| My Color Classic |
Posted by: mikesworldus on 2015-02-24 16:58:59 Hey guys, I've been collecting macs for a couple of years now, my favorites are the all-in-ones, I hope to eventually get one of each. From the beginning, the one I've been searching for the most is a Color Classic, I just think they look great!
I came across one on craigslist over the weekend and had to jump on it. They were advertising it in good condition but it wouldn't turn on. Hmm, maybe it's something obvious haha. Either way, they were asking only $50 for it, how could I pass that up?
I picked it up yesterday and took it home for a better look.

I see there is something in the PDS slot, so I pulled it out to see what it was.

Some kind of accelerator board, I couldn't find any information about it online.
More pictures of the logic board, it's very clean inside!

I put the logic board back in and powered it on, got this:

It powered on just fine, no abnormal noises or anything. Startup chime is nice and loud. However the hard drive is continuously spinning up and down. Next step is to check out the hard drive. I didn't take any pictures of this process, but I pulled a Conner 80mb out of the case. Following instructions elsewhere on this forum, I carefully opened the drive and checked out the gooey rubber bumpers. Sure enough, they had completely stuck the head against one side. I removed and replaced the rubber with some that I had laying around. Put it all back together, powered on, and got this:

IT LIVES! It's maxed out at 10mb. There is an extension installed for the accelerator, an Extreme Systems Impact RGB. MacCheck shows a 68030 running at 33mhz. I don't know anything else about this board, if anyone knows anything let me know!

Posted by: rickrob on 2015-02-24 17:26:04 Nice! It looks really clean.
It looks like it has external video, on that 15 pin D connector. What does the Monitors control panel show?
I'd recap the logic board as soon as you can, or have it done. It looks like C8 is leaking badly and maybe C6 but that one's hard to see in the pics.
Does the floppy work? I'd copy and save that accelerator extension/cdev for sure, just in case the hard drive stops again...

Posted by: olePigeon on 2015-02-24 18:40:35 Wow. ย Is that an 030 and video card bundled into one? ย That is one cool looking upgrade.

Posted by: miniMOJOman on 2015-02-24 18:41:01 that is an awesome find bro!!! I am really enjoying the accelerator board! You should definitely save those the control panel/extension for the accelerator ASAP as rickrob mentioned! ๐ ย

Posted by: mikesworldus on 2015-02-24 18:46:39 The monitors control panel just shows 'Macintosh Built-In Video' with a maximum of 256 colors.
Thanks for the advice on backing up the accelerator software, the floppy drive works fine so I just backed it all up.

Posted by: techknight on 2015-02-24 19:29:42 For the condition and additives, You stole that thing for that price! Hey, at least you found one and you probably deserved it. ๐

Posted by: unity on 2015-02-24 19:44:17 Wow, great deal on a great find! I have two of the little buggers - love em!
|
Posted by: Macdrone on 2015-02-24 21:13:12 You have to hook an external monitor to see it in control panels.

Posted by: tt on 2015-02-24 22:08:53 Nice score, congrats! Take some nice pics of that red board. ๐

Posted by: EvilCapitalist on 2015-02-25 04:43:13 Finding a Color Classic, let alone one in excellent shape (non-yellowed, not banged up) with an accelerator card is quite the conquest.ย You definitely hit the jackpot with that one, congrats!

Posted by: Bunsen on 2015-02-25 05:03:10 ^ High rez scans of both sides would be greatly appreciated, if you have a scanner handy.
Agreed, that upgrade is nice.ย Very badass ๐ ย I'd suggest sending the control panel and any extension you can find off to the mac driver museum for preservation.

Posted by: Bunsen on 2015-02-25 05:04:26 Oh hey, turns out they already have them.ย And it turns out there was a 50MHz version of that bad boy.
Extreme Systems
- Impact and Extender v1.22 (29 k)
- Drivers for the Extreme Systems Impact and Extender 030 accelerator boards for the LC 1 and 2.
- Vandal Accelerator v1.1a2 (180 k)
- Drivers for the Extreme Systems Vandal accelerator for the Mac SE. This accelerator had a 50 Mhz 68030 and monochrome video out to support the 19" monochrome monitors of the time.

Posted by: Bunsen on 2015-02-25 05:11:30 There's even an old thread here about them.
Mentioned on LEM here and in their machine profile under "Accelerators and Upgrades"
ย
I have been using an Impact 030 (made by Extreme Systems, purchased from Pacific Ma) on my Color Classic and have had no problems whatsoever with it. Boosts speed to 32 MHz and doesnโt require an extension. It has an FPU slot, as well.
