| My Mac OS Collection |
Posted by: slomacuser on 2008-05-07 23:01:53 I made a page in iWeb of my software collection, so here it is
http://www.freeweb.siol.net/jstarc4/Mac%20OS%20History%20Collection/Mac%20OS.html
Well, I am missing some versions, like Boxed Tiger ... etc

Posted by: Scott Baret on 2008-05-08 20:42:20 Very nice!!! I especially like the System 5 box!!!
That first System 7 box--is that 7.0 or 7.0.1? I know 7.1 came in a different box with a huge "7" on it. Also, is that the individual or the group kit?

Posted by: LCGuy on 2008-05-09 05:56:44 Very nice. 🙂 I actually never knew that versions of Macintosh SSW prior to System 7 came in a boxed form - previous to System 7, Apple used to give out the Mac OS for free.

Posted by: slomacuser on 2008-05-09 08:31:30 thx, ... the System 7 is international (Z1) version 7.0 Personal Upgrade Kit on Double Sided (800k) diskettes.

|
Posted by: slomacuser on 2008-06-14 03:02:07 thx, for compliments 😉 I updated it with System 7.1 (800k) box, Mac OS X DP4 and System 6.0.6 diskette and also add the localised screen shots ...

Posted by: Scott Baret on 2008-06-14 10:29:11 Not everyone belonged to a user group, which is where Apple allowed system software distribution until 1992 or 2001, depending on which way you look at it. (System 7.1 was retail-only and in 2001 Apple banned freely distributing older versions of the software--remember when Mac512 had to take their stuff offline?)
System 6 was also available in a box. I remember seeing it in old catalogs even after System 7 was out. I think it had the Scrapbook on the box.

Posted by: slomacuser on 2008-06-14 10:54:42 system 6 was actually in similiar box as system 5, same design and graphic
|
Posted by: Bunsen on 2008-06-15 08:20:03 Haha. I was fooled for a minute there. When I got to the thumbnail for System 6, I thought it was a retail box made like a giant floppy disk! Which would have been very cool.

Posted by: blixanz on 2008-06-15 20:50:22 Very nice 🙂 - Wish my software collection was boxed like that - at least they are still shrink wrapped.

Posted by: returningmacuser on 2008-06-18 06:50:40 Love the collection. Say, do you think you could put up some screenshots of the System 7 alpha and beta? :beige:
|
Posted by: slomacuser on 2008-06-18 11:04:20 Right know I do not have a color mac that can run beta and alpha software, so I made a color screenshots in Basilisk emulator. The Alpha interstingly can not run in Basilisk but in vMac emulator whic one is B&W saddly... anyway I opened the system folder of alpha with Resedit so you can se what would icons look like in color mac. Interestingly there is Mac Plus color icon that was never used, and some others like baloon hlep icons were changed too.

Posted by: Dog Cow on 2008-10-02 12:43:43 I happen to have a OS 8.6 beta on a burned CD, but unfortunately some of the reflective stuff has come off, plus scratches, so I can't get any Mac to read it anymore. But I still hold onto it because one day I might be able to fix it!
|
Posted by: Christopher on 2008-10-02 12:54:01 You can't fix it. Once that reflective stuff is gone, thats it. That is what the data is written to.

http://shrani.si/f/1B/a8/1d20DG1u/picture5.jpg Picture 5 caught my eye. Fonts are in a separate folder, apparently in System 7 alpha, but that feature did not ship until System 7.1. Also note Access Privileges as a separate item in the System Folder. Thanks.
[Edit] What is CL/1?

Posted by: slomacuser on 2008-10-02 13:47:18 The seperate folders inside System are interesting to me too, it was more organized then they used in 7.0 when all files were in same suitcase system file.
