G4 533MHz ZIF - $20
Posted by: Bunsen on 2008-03-19 14:12:10
Ebay seller IC-China has just listed a stack of new ZIFs; some G4s and some G3s. Have a look in their shop under Chips->IBM and ->Motorola.

I just scored a G4 533 for $20, so help yourselves to what's left }🙂 The ones with 750 in the serial number are G3s and the ones with 74-- are G4s.

I've always found them a reliable seller.

I look at that feller's site every day, the most recent look being at about 0730 today, and damme if he didn't list just afterwards. I agree about his reliability, in quality, price and promptness. Even the USD2 creep in G4/500 price in five months is chicken-poo.

I'm having trouble finding this... is there a way to search for a specific seller?

Posted by: equill on 2008-03-19 18:20:39
In or near the header of most eBay pages (whatever the localization), near the Search button, is the text 'Advanced Search'. Click it, and then select Items by Seller in the left-hand panel of 'Search: Find Items'. You can enter the exact eBay ID of a target seller, or an approximation of the ID, in the left-hand panel of 'Search: Items by Seller'. The approximation will get you a list of possible targets on which to search or to home in on.

Would the ZIF G3/G4s work in an XLR8 MacCarrier ZIF daughtercard in a 9600? Currently have a G3 450 @ 520 in there but would go a little more speed.

Thanks

A ZIF is a ZIF

I have XLR8 ZIF G4/500MHz upgrades in my Beige G3 DT and MT, but I stick with G3 ZIFs in my 7300, 9650 and 9600 (nÊe an 8600). My suspicion is that the graphics capability of a G4 is wasted in Beige 60x Macs. Look for the Sonnet realizations of G4 ZIF cards for the greatest stability/versatility.

While I would tend to agree with you equill with respect to the 60x Macs and G4's.

That being said I still have a 500MHz G4 in a ZIF Carrier card in my 8500. It was either that or a 233MHz G3. Now whilst either chip would make for an excellent upgrade in terms of overall performance, I went for the G4 for sheer speed and to Altivec just in case. I have noticed that the G4 really kicks in under Jaguar. In OS 9.1 I have great performance. I suspect it is mainly due to it's 500MHz clock and not the presence of Altivec.

Still a 533MHz G4 for $20 is a freakin' steal.

Then you and I differ scarcely at all. I don't put OS X on Beige 60x PPCs, but keep them in 9.2.2, for which a G3/500MHz does exceeding fine. There are, excluding my wife's G3 iBook and G4 eMac, seven machines with a native G3 or G4 in the house, running 10.2, 10.3 (five of them) and 10.4. There is neither need nor entertainment, for me, in pressganging the Beige 60x Macs into running any flavour of OS X, and that is not the least part of my point that G4s are pointless in those beige boxes. It isn't my belief that no-one should do so, though.

My rebuilt PowerTower Pro 225 is giving me such grief at the moment, however, that I am tempted to make it run Jaguar as punishment, when I get it going.

That's your lookout, sir, I run OS X (note: not necessarily the OS X you are thinking of 😛 ) on anything I can because I don't like OS 9. I've even run Tiger on a 8550 WGS with a G3/366 in and it went well enough for me to not run away screaming. Incidentally I bought the last G4 he had listed this morning (a really old XPC7400/400 ZIF) for said same 8550 WGS.

Does anyone know if OS X Server 1.2 supports G4s? I thought it did...

Oh and while I'm at it, NOT all ZIF CPUs are born equal. Some of Motorola OEM Apple G3s apparently don't work on the XLR8 ZIF carrier. I have a G3/400 out of my B&W PowerMac that's sat in a box on a shelf, that I *was* going to put in the 8550 WGS, but, alas it doesn't work in the carrier, and the seller has said to me that he's had issues using Motorola OEM modules on XLR8 carriers (I tested a G3/400 and my seller also tested a G3/400 on his to see if it was a fluke) on many occasions, so stick to IBM G3 modules if you can. I have no clue if the G4/400 I bought will work but at that price I can afford a spare knocking about 😉

hmmm... all g4s seem to be gone. but still snatched an IBM G3 500mhz for $10... 6.30â‚Ŧ 😀 yay for cheap dollars 😛

thx bunsen for the tip... the CPU is already on the way to me. curious how long it will take.

i really like their international shipping flat.

10â‚Ŧ shipped for a 500mhz G3 :O - there was one going for 40+shipping on german ebay last week 😉

All he has left are 450mhz G3s... (the 450s have a 1mb cache, right?)

The pins on them in the pics look weird though. They look like they are black instead of gold. Is that normal?

They also say untested, which kind of worries me.

Link? Sounds like somebody removed the gold plating 😉

Those pins are just fine.

Had he taken a side shot we would be able to see this.

Okay then, in for one! 😀

So... do I need to change my jumpers to use this? (450mhz G3 into a 266mhz beige G3)

I apologize ahead of time if this question induces any facepalms.

I got a pair 40hz 040's from them cheap. I'll have to check them out. Those ZIF upgrades are usually expensive.
