| Error type 25? |
Posted by: Gil on 2008-01-30 15:55:40 Hi,
was using my new Performa today when Desktop Pictures cp crashed, and i had to do a hard restart (from the keyboard), and now all it displays on bootup is a messages saying there is an error of type 25. There is a very fast message that pops up before it, but it goes off way too fast to read it.
What is a type 25 error, and how do i fix it?

Try restarting with your shift key down. Also, don't rule out a corrupt Desktop Pictures panel or even a virus. If the shift key doesn't do the trick, restart from a Disk Tools or similar disk with Disinfectant on it. (Also copy Agax over in case it's a SevenDust infection).

Posted by: Gil on 2008-01-30 17:44:20 Well, it booted just fine before. after rebooting many times to see the split-second message, it says "Just found out what BETA stands for". No idea what that means. lol. Shift doesn't work. Booting from an OS 8 disc works, but the finder freezes.

Posted by: Gil on 2008-01-30 17:55:25 Swear to god. I would take a picture, but i don't think it'd be able to catch it in time. It literally displays for less than half a second.

Posted by: Scott Baret on 2008-01-30 18:40:29 Take it on a camcorder.
This sounds like some malicious activity to me. As I said, run Disinfectant/Agax...but that box isn't from any virus I know of (I am familiar with most of the viruses from 1995 and earlier--they were documented really well in Disinfectant and I must have read that documentation about 50 times every year around then to keep up with everything).

Posted by: Gil on 2008-01-30 18:54:36 It got kinda cut off, but here's basically what it says.
"Just figured out what BETA stands for"

Its hard to tell in this uploaded version. Its easier in QuickTime, where you can pan precisely to the point. If anyone wants the actual video file to view in Quicktime, PM me.

Posted by: Christopher on 2008-01-30 18:55:35 Thats gotta be a virus of some sort, or an easter egg 😛
|
Posted by: Gil on 2008-01-30 18:56:48 Wonder how it happened? Any FREE virus programs out ther that are bootable?
|
Posted by: LCGuy on 2008-01-30 18:59:24 What system version are you running? Might be interesting to look in the CP's STR or STR# resources to see if I can find it 🙂

Posted by: Scott Baret on 2008-01-30 19:03:37 Try booting with some other disc if you've got one. Check the modification date of the System and Finder in your system folder.

Posted by: Scott Baret on 2008-01-30 19:07:45 I see it's a 578. Use a System 7.5 disk tools floppy, Apple should have one on their website. Rebuild your desktop when you start up. Some viruses manifest themselves there (though most of them didn't attack System 7 if I recall...I know CDEF doesn't and I'm pretty sure WDEF doesn't either).
Also, Disinfectant and Agax are both free. They're small enough you can fit them on a disk tools floppy if you get rid of Apple HD SC Setup and Disk First Aid.

Posted by: Gil on 2008-01-30 19:09:38 It has System 7.6 on the hard drive. How would i get into the resources? Will check out the Disk Tools diskette tomorrow, thanks!

Posted by: Scott Baret on 2008-01-30 19:12:58 To get into the resources LCGuy talks about, you need ResEdit.

Posted by: Gil on 2008-01-31 14:23:02 Having problems creating the disk on Mac OS X. It only formats up to 1.1 MB. Is there a way to make 68k compatible floppies? There are only options for Apple Partition Map(PPC), Intel, and MBR.

Posted by: Gil on 2008-01-31 14:57:19 Tried it with the Network Access disk i made several years ago, and basically its my IIvx story all over again. It loads up to the Happy Mac icon, then spits it out. Why do computers hate me so much?
|
Posted by: Gil on 2008-01-31 17:32:27 Well i got the boot disk to work and did a scan with Disinfectant. It didn't find any viruses, but it found an error. I couldn't figure out what that was about.
|
Posted by: Gil on 2008-01-31 17:55:56 Well, i've decided i'm just going to format the drive and install 7.5.3. It currently has 7.6. Is that worth hanging on to? I never see 7.6 on ebay or anything, so I'm wondering if it's worth something.

Posted by: Kallikak on 2008-01-31 18:22:21 Sounds much more like programmer humour than a virus to me. Try deleting any relevant prefs. What do you mean by "Shift doesn't work"? Are you saying that booting with shift held down doesn't disable extensions?
